Second Grade Curriculum

Our Bible series is One in Christ by Concordia Publishing. Bible stories are taught weekly and memory verses memorized weekly. Chapel is every Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. Please join us if you can.

This year grades kindergarten through sixth will be using the new EnVision math series by Pearson. This series aligns with Common Core Standards. It also leads us into a digital age of curriculum. Each student will have their own online information to access their full student book. There are also other resources online that you as parents will have access to. We will continue with math facts in a flash this year.

Operations, thinking skills, problem solving, estimation, data, statistics, geometry, and probability are emphasized appropriately at all grade levels. Additionally, through paper and pencil exercises and hands-on activities, the children will begin to visualize numerical concepts. We will have opportunities to use hand-held calculators, and will spend time working on time and money concepts.

The text used in social studies is the Houghton Mifflin series, California! It is rich with information about history, traditions, famous people, holidays, families, maps and careers.

Students will use the Pearson series this year. Victory Drill, a phonics program, allows the children to progress at their own pace. We will teach the conventions of written English. Writing is also a key component and will be taught throughout the series. Our strategy will be fluency first, followed by form and correctness. In addition, we will teach listening and speaking skills. Spelling units are geared according to a specific emphasis (i.e., words with short “I”). Students will also practice high frequency words and participate in Accelerated Reader, a web-based reading incentive program. Kindergarten through sixth grade will use the writing series, Step Up To Writing. This series compliments our Language Arts curriculum and provides a structured approach to writing skills.

Second grade continues to work on manuscript handwriting. Cursive is introduced and practiced in second grade. The textbook A Reason for Handwriting  is used.

Home and school communication is a vital link to your child having a successful school experience at St. Peter’s. It takes all of us working together to provide for your child. Each class has a class page on Sycamore School Management Systems. Each Friday the events and curriculum for the next week, (Friday notes), will be posted on the class page and also emailed to your address. You can communicate with your child’s teacher on Sycamore through the PAN (Pass A Note) system or email. The teacher will respond within 24 business hours. Please use this feature whenever you can. You may also call the school office and leave a message for the teacher to return your call.

Your Friday notes and Sycamore pages are the best way to know what is happening in your child’s school life. Your child will also bring home an envelope on Friday which will include previous finished work and the homework packet for the coming week.

Primary classrooms are equipped with computers. In addition, grades 2 and 3 will use the computer lab to learn keyboarding. They will use Mavis Beacon to practice twice a week. They may also use the lab to take AR quizzes, and practice Math Fact in a Flash.

There are five basic elements to regular second grade homework.

  1. Victory Drill should be practiced nightly.
  2. Math Facts in a Flash should be practiced on your assigned nights.
  3. Children should read or be read to each evening.
  4. Children will complete a weekly homework packet.
  5. Occasionally special projects may need some work at home.
